Start Placement Preparations

A structured introduction to placement preparation covering the essential areas students should focus on.

1. Comprehensive Multi-Topic Diagnostic Tests

  • Idea: Timed mixed assessment batteries covering Quantitative Aptitude, Logical Reasoning, Verbal Ability, and Data Interpretation to benchmark current skill levels.
  • Rule: Allocate 60 minutes for a 50-question mixed set. Do not exceed 72 seconds per question. Questions are randomly drawn from topics: Percentages, Averages, Ratios, Syllogisms, Blood Relations, Series, Sentence Correction, Vocabulary, and Bar Graphs. The goal is to identify weak areas for focused practice.
  • Example:
  • Problem: Take a 50-question diagnostic test with four sections (Quant 15, Reasoning 15, English 10, Data Interpretation 10) in 60 minutes. Sample questions: Quant — “If A is 20% more than B, what percent less is B than A?” Reasoning — “Find the next term: 3, 8, 15, 24, ?” English — “Choose the correct word: The data ______ (is/are) insufficient.” DI — Interpret a bar chart of quarterly sales. After scoring, identify weak areas.
  • Solution:
  • Step 1: Quant — “If A is 20% more than B” means A = 1.2 * B. The question asks what percent less B is than A: (A-B)/A * 100 = (1.2B - B) / 1.2B * 100 = 0.2/1.2 * 100 = 16.67%. So B is 16.67% less than A.
  • Step 2: Reasoning — Identify the pattern in 3, 8, 15, 24. Differences: 8-3=5, 15-8=7, 24-15=9. The differences increase by 2 each time. Next difference = 11, so next term = 24 + 11 = 35.
  • Step 3: English — “Data” can be singular or plural. In formal usage, “data” is the plural of “datum,” so “are” is correct. However, modern usage often treats it as singular. For placement exams, the traditional rule applies: “The data are insufficient.”
  • Step 4: DI — If the bar chart shows Q1=40, Q2=55, Q3=45, Q4=60 thousand units, calculate total = 40+55+45+60 = 200 thousand units. Average per quarter = 200/4 = 50 thousand.
  • Step 5: Score analysis. Suppose the candidate scores: Quant 10/15 (67%), Reasoning 8/15 (53%), English 9/10 (90%), DI 5/10 (50%). Weak areas: Reasoning (53%) and DI (50%). Prioritize practice on arrangements, syllogisms, and data interpretation next week.
  • Answer: Weak areas identified as Reasoning and Data Interpretation — focus next week’s practice there.

2. Company-Specific Exam Mock Simulations

  • Idea: Pattern-matched mock tests that mirror the exact section distribution, difficulty level, and time limits of live corporate placement drives (TCS, Infosys, Wipro, Accenture, Amazon).
  • Rule: Research the company’s latest test pattern from previous year papers. For example, TCS NQT has 60 questions in 90 minutes (Quant 20, Reasoning 20, Verbal 20) with no negative marking. Simulate under identical conditions: same time limit, same section order, same difficulty ratio (easy 30%, medium 50%, hard 20%).
  • Example:
  • Problem: Simulate a TCS NQT mock test. Part A — Numerical Ability: 20 questions in 40 minutes (5 profit/loss, 5 time/work, 5 ratios, 5 probability). Part B — Reasoning: 20 questions in 30 minutes (5 coding-decoding, 5 arrangements, 5 syllogisms, 5 blood relations). Part C — Verbal: 20 questions in 20 minutes (5 error spotting, 5 fill blanks, 5 reading comprehension, 5 para-jumbles). Score 70% or above to be considered placement-ready.
  • Solution:
  • Step 1: Set up the test environment. Allocate exactly 90 minutes total with a timer. Follow the section order: Part A first (40 min), then Part B (30 min), then Part C (20 min). No backtracking between sections.
  • Step 2: Part A — Numerical Ability (40 min). Sample questions: Profit/loss: “A shopkeeper sells an item for Rs. 120 at a 20% profit. Find the cost price.” Profit = 20% of CP, so SP = 1.2 * CP = 120, CP = 120/1.2 = Rs. 100. Time/work: “A can do a job in 10 days, B in 15 days. How many days together?” Combined rate = 1/10 + 1/15 = 5/30 = 1/6, so 6 days. Ratios: “If A:B = 2:3 and B:C = 4:5, find A:C.” A:C = (24):(35) = 8:15. Probability: “Roll a die, find P(even number).” Favorable = 3 (2,4,6), total = 6, P = 3/6 = 1/2.
  • Step 3: Part B — Reasoning (30 min). Coding-decoding: “If CAT = 24, then DOG = ?” C=3, A=1, T=20, sum=24. D=4, O=15, G=7, sum=26. Arrangements puzzle, syllogisms (e.g., “All A are B. Some B are C. Conclusion: Some A are C. Is this valid?” No definite conclusion), blood relations.
  • Step 4: Part C — Verbal (20 min). Error spotting: find the line with a grammatical mistake. Fill blanks: choose the right word from context. Reading comprehension: read a passage and answer questions. Para-jumbles: order 5 scrambled sentences.
  • Step 5: Score evaluation. Total 60 questions. Target = 70% = 42 correct. If the candidate scores at least 42, they are placement-ready for TCS NQT. If below, review the weakest section first.
  • Answer: Scoring 42+ out of 60 (70%) indicates placement-readiness for TCS NQT.
